Dorothy Sullivan Prints
Artwork by Cherokee master artist Dorothy Sullivan, Memory Circle Studio.

War and Peace - Print
"War and Peace" by Dorothy Sullivan, Cherokee master artist, Memory Circle Studio.

To the Cherokee, everything had an opposite or balance. The Falcon was the symbol of war (as shown on the war shield with 7 feathers for the 7 clans). The rattlesnake design border is red (war and power) and black (death). The man was the hunter and warrior; revenge was the reason for war. Man was the Moon and Wintertime (the season of hunts and war parties). The Eagle was the Cherokee symbol for peace. The white (peace) and yellow (color for priests) border is the Cherokee friendship design. The woman was the farmer and homemaker, responsible for the home and children. She and her child represent peace and the future. Woman was the Sun and Summertime (season for farming and peace).

This print is ready to frame in any 8 x 10 inch frame of your choice. Double matted in cream on red and backed with acid free board. Not signed.

The photograph does not show the full mat. The red mat is a bit brighter than it appears here.

After The Tears, New Hope - Print
"After the Tears, New Hope" by Dorothy Sullivan, Cherokee master artist, Memory Circle Studio.

The children are the hope of any nation. With the blue memory circle of the Trail of Tears behind her, the Cherokee mother lifts her child up out of the depths of the red clay of Oklahoma. The red clay pot is decorated with blue tears, black for the 4,000 who died, and white for the hope of the new land. The golden Phoenix Bird represents the strength and courage of the Cherokee to rise above tragedy, to make opportunities, and to become strong again.

This painting placed Third at the 1991 Trail of Tears Art Show.

The mat has been cropped in this photo as well so you can better view the image.
